Finding the Right Tutor Fit
Here’s the thought behind every personalized tutor match we make at Westbrook Tutoring.
As founder and CEO of Westbrook Tutoring, one of the things I enjoy most about my work is meeting families and tutors across the country. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with families in Toronto, and those conversations reminded me how much there is to learn beyond the subject a student needs help with.
When I meet a family in person, I get a feel for the household and the rhythm of their days. I learn about busy schedules, after-school activities, and the interests that are important to their children. All of those things help me understand where tutoring might fit into family life and what kind of support will feel manageable and worthwhile.
Of course, finding a tutor with the right subject knowledge is essential. But I also think carefully about personality and teaching style. What will engage this particular student? Do they need someone energetic and enthusiastic, or someone calm and patient? Would they benefit from a tutor who brings structure to each session, or someone who can find creative ways to connect the material to their interests?
The answers are different for every child. That’s why I take time with each family’s file, considering not only the academic support a student needs right now, but also the kind of relationship that could help them grow over time.
Many of our tutoring relationships continue for years. A tutor may begin working with a child who is struggling with one subject and go on to support them through new grades, changing goals, and important transitions. Along the way, that tutor often becomes a familiar and trusted part of the family’s life.
That longevity matters to me. Westbrook has been part of children’s and families’ lives for many years, and I never take that trust lightly. A good match can give a student someone to turn to when school feels challenging and someone who recognizes how far they’ve come.
Meeting families and tutors across the country continues to energize me. Every conversation adds to my understanding of what students need and what makes a tutoring relationship work. And when we find the right fit, it’s exciting to think about all the learning, confidence, and connection that can grow from there.
