Why Subject-Specific Tutoring Matters

Nicole Huntley • April 8, 2026

At Westbrook, we often see students start tutoring in one subject, commonly math and then, over time, begin to need support in another area as well.

When that happens, it can be tempting to simply extend the existing tutor’s role across subjects.

We don’t recommend that.

Our tutors are selected and trained with a clear focus: they are specialists in their disciplines. That specialization matters. Each subject requires a different way of thinking, teaching, and communicating.

A strong math tutor is not necessarily the best fit for English, just as an English specialist may not be the right choice for science.

When a new need arises, the most effective step is to let us know. We will match your student with a tutor who is specifically equipped to support that subject, ensuring both clarity and confidence moving forward.

This is part of our commitment at Westbrook: to provide precise, thoughtful tutor–student alignment that leads to meaningful academic progress.
